After years of higher and higher malpractice premiums and after one company or another allegedly declining to write lawyer's malpractice policies I found myself facing an $11,000 bill for a $1,000,000 single limit policy with a $10,000 deductible for the year 2008-2009. According to the broker I could only get coverage through a reinsurance company and therefore the policy limits also included defense costs.

I finally contacted the Association's partner, Bertholan-Rowland, and within days I had a $1,000,000 single limit policy with no deductible from a first line carrier for less than $3,000 per year. Pursuant to New Jersey law, defense costs are not part of the policy limits, and the $3,000 cost includes the cost of financing the premium.
